Anima Mundi is an invite-only 18+ Original Character Discord Roleplay group inspired loosely by the lore of Funcom's 2012 MMO The Secret World. Anima Mundi takes place in a modern world that passes its days wholly ignorant of magic, monsters, and the many societies that deal in both. Yet for those that peel the wool from their eyes, there beneath the thin skin of modern skepticism lies a world teeming with oddities and centuries-old feuds.Your characters find themselves in the quiet sea-side town of New Portsmouth. Something has called them here – or perhaps they have always been here (is that not a call of its own?). Either way, if one’s eyes are not yet open to the truth of this hidden world, that is due to change. Dominoes have been set. The cascade is incoming.Power stirs within those who have heard the call. One question remains: can you carry it?

The world at large...

Since time immemorial, the best and worst kept secret of history has hidden just out of sight, lingering in the shadows and secret places of our world. This secret, for all its mystery, is inextricable from the world we know - It is omnipresent. The extraordinary walk the same streets as you and I, its myriad denizens integrating themselves seamlessly into the everyday lives of the common folk.Magic, superstition, and powers beyond human comprehension drive this hidden world. If it exists in the annals of human history - whether spoken, worshiped, or reviled - then it lives. Be they elden gods or fantastical creatures, capricious tricksters or the monster under your bed - seek, and you shall find.Given this seamless integration, it should come as no surprise that countless cities and towns host their own communities of the supernatural, colloquially known as 'secret societies'. As is ever the way of the mighty, the most ancient and powerful of these societies have made it their mission to exert their will upon the world of magic. Their goals vary widely - and all too often place them at odds with each other. Smaller, localized societies might number as few as three members, but the greatest of them swell to hundreds, even thousands. Scholars, hunters, seasoned combatants both militant and non-, each with a purpose, a goal, and a mind to achieve it regardless of the cost.Scuffles between societies are common, some of the largest having once maintained active fire orders against others for over a century. In the last ten years a push for a ceasefire has driven all major players to lay aside their grudges. At least officially…It is in this era of tentative, simmering peace that you find yourself. The ordinary world is none the wiser, the secret world is as calm as it can be; yet something new is in the air. Old hands know that such a mix of signs spells nothing but trouble. Peace in the secret world is always a precursor to some kind of upheaval.

A sleepy port township of five thousand that sprung up around one of the Puget Sound’s many inlets. Flanked by the sound on one side and Washington State’s Hoh temperate rainforest on the other, New Portsmouth is neatly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.Not for lack of trying; while the majority of the town’s activity centers on fishing and the marina that facilitates it, New Portsmouth is also home to a satellite campus. Sponsored by a Seattle university, this campus was established by its biology department to take advantage of the township’s easy access to the rainforest and open water. Thanks to this, a slow trickle of new blood – namely city kids in search of a semester’s break in the Northwest wilderness or field-focused biology students – keeps the town from being completely behind the times.New Portsmouth itself is spread out over the miles of shore and thinner forests that surround its focal inlet. The township’s “downtown” is small but robust; a single gas station-slash-convenience-store, a handful of local restaurants, one cinema, a local grocer, and a smattering of supply shops all clustered around the marina. Spiraling out from there is a latticework of back-yard shops, smaller restaurants, and the satellite campus, intermingled with the townsfolk’s homes and occasional tourist lodging.Underneath the simple outer projection New Portsmouth presents lives a long history of the supernatural. Those acquainted with the secret world know it as a safe haven; many magical families have called it home for generations, and each year a dozen more join their ranks. City hall is staffed largely by the extraordinary, another draw for those fleeing the more restrictive and more “secret” metropolis lifestyle. Others still are drawn by the town’s ideal location; settled just between earth and sea, and atop an intersection of multiple fonts, New Portsmouth thrums with power in a way few small towns do.No matter who you are or what background you have, New Portsmouth surely must have something for you; you were called here after all...
